Perfect Blue 4K UHD Steelbook vs. Standard Blu-ray: Which to Buy?

Quick answer

If you have a 4K UHD player and care about packaging, the Perfect Blue Limited Edition Steelbook is the version to get: it bundles 4K UHD and Blu-ray discs in a limited steelbook. If you only own a standard Blu-ray player, or you simply want the movie with no premium packaging, a standard Blu-ray is the more sensible buy.

What you actually get in each version

The Perfect Blue Limited Edition Steelbook is a 4K UHD + Blu-ray set. That means the film is presented on a 4K UHD disc for compatible players, with a Blu-ray copy included as well. It arrives in a steelbook case, which is the main physical difference from a standard Blu-ray release. The catalog listing does not specify HDR format, region coding, or disc-level extras, so treat those as unknowns until you check the back cover or a retailer listing.

A standard Blu-ray release of Perfect Blue gives you the film on Blu-ray only, in a regular plastic case. It will play in any standard Blu-ray player and costs less at list price. If you don't own a 4K player, the 4K disc in the steelbook set is effectively a coaster — you'd be paying for a format you can't use.

How the two versions compare on price and value

The steelbook's catalog price is USD 32.84, with a comparison price of USD 44.98. That gap matters because it puts the 4K steelbook close to what many standard Blu-rays cost at full price. If you already have a 4K setup, the step up is small for a dual-format set in collectible packaging.

The trade-off is that you're paying for two things at once: the 4K disc and the steelbook itself. If you only want the film and don't care about the case, that extra spend is wasted. If you do care, the steelbook is the only way to get this particular packaging — it isn't sold as a standard-edition variant.

Where the steelbook fits in a Satoshi Kon collection

Perfect Blue is Satoshi Kon's debut feature, and it's the film that established his interest in blurred identity and psychological unease. For collectors building a Kon shelf, the steelbook is the more display-friendly option and matches the limited-edition steelbook format used for other anime releases. If you already own limited steelbooks for other titles, this one will sit consistently alongside them.

If your collection is mostly standard Blu-rays and you prioritize shelf uniformity over premium cases, a standard Blu-ray keeps the look consistent. Neither choice affects the film itself.

Two other steelbooks worth knowing about

If you're shopping GKIDS Store for limited steelbooks, two other titles use the same format and are worth a look. The Secret World of Arrietty Limited Edition Steelbook is a Blu-ray + DVD set from director Hiromasa Yonebayashi, based on The Borrowers. It's priced at USD 16.19 against a USD 26.99 comparison price, making it one of the lower-cost steelbooks in the catalog — a good entry point if you want to try the format before committing to a pricier 4K set.

Arcane League of Legends Season 1 Limited Edition Steelbook is a Blu-ray set with all nine Season One episodes across three discs, in Vi-themed packaging. At USD 32.99 against a USD 54.98 comparison price, it's a different kind of purchase: a full season rather than a single film. If you're weighing a steelbook purchase and you want more runtime for your money, that's a factor the Perfect Blue set can't match.

Trade-offs to weigh before you choose

• 4K UHD disc vs. Blu-ray only: The steelbook includes both a 4K UHD and a Blu-ray disc; a standard Blu-ray release gives you only the Blu-ray. The 4K disc only helps if you own a 4K UHD player. No 4K player? Skip the steelbook and put the savings toward another title.
• Steelbook packaging vs. standard case: The limited steelbook is the collectible format and the only way to get this specific case. A standard Blu-ray is cheaper and simpler but won't match a steelbook shelf. Buy for the case only if you actually display or value it.
• Price gap vs. comparison price: At USD 32.84 against a USD 44.98 comparison price, the steelbook sits close to standard Blu-ray pricing — but you're still paying a premium over the cheapest way to own the film. The gap is small enough to justify if you have the hardware; otherwise it isn't.
• Single film vs. multi-disc sets: The Perfect Blue set is one film on two discs. The Arcane Season 1 steelbook is nine episodes across three Blu-ray discs, so runtime per dollar differs sharply. Decide whether you're buying a film or a binge before comparing prices.
